Rec Before and After School Care Flyer

It has been a beautiful start to summer. Finally, some great weather! If you did not get a chance to get into the summer routine of combating 'The Summer Slide,' here is a gentle reminder of the 4 Things Every Child Should Do every day in the summer.

Do Something for your Brain- I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for students to be automatic with their multiplication facts. Flashcards at home are the best way to accomplish this! Dollar Tree and many website have low-cost choices for this. If your child is automatic with their multiplication facts, there are a lot of great math websites that I have vetted over the years. Reach out to me if you have questions: ian_daecher@hempfieldsd.org.

Do Something for your Mind- Read, read, read! The Lancaster Public Library gave presentations to all students in May about summer reading. See this website for more details. Students should be reading at least 20 minutes every day in the summer.

Do Something for your Body- Students should exercise every day. Summer is the perfect time to get out and ride bikes, swim, or practice a sport.

Do Something for your Family- Have a discussion about a safe, age-appropriate chore your child can do for the family every day.

If students do this every day, they will have a fun and rewarding summer. If it helps, feel free to tell your child that it is Dr. Daecher's homework : )

Did you know that your school is a Title I school? That means we receive extra federal funding — because of the hard work our families and community put in every day — to provide additional learning support for our students. We use these funds to bring Reading Specialists and Coaches into our classrooms to give every child the boost they need to succeed.

We want to hear from you! Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey. The survey should not take more than 10 minutes to complete. This survey will close on Wednesday, June 10.

Your feedback helps us plan better events and find new ways to support your family. Thank you!

Thank you for all of the wonderful support you gave the students to help them be successful. We wish the best to our 6th graders heading to the middle school... make us proud!

Just in case you were counting... there are 87 days of summer. If your child does not do any academic work over the summer, they are likely to lose quite a bit in their academic progress. After researching and reading on the best strategies to avoid the 'summer slide,' I found four things that are helpful for students in the summer. If students do these four things every day, they will have a great summer and be able to pick up right away on the first day of school.
